extended physical
The young mare is of light build, swift and feminine. At fourteen and three-quarters of a hand, she stands only an inch above the line drawn between "pony" and "horse." Her face is almost entirely white and her muzzle takes on the usual "sunburned" look required of such markings. Smart black eyes are placed in a method precise upon her chiseled and concave visage. The leanness of her skull seems to trend her appearance towards ditsy and dumb, but this perception is subdued by her nearly trademark pinned ears and narrowed eyes. Lark's thick, cream-coloured mane is the accompaniment to her smutty and dappled palomino coat, an ivory-white veil to a newly minted copper coin.
Alouette's legs carry no feathering, and her hooves are a brown which borders black due to the darkened, sooty markings about her limbs. Her tail is as creamy and pure-coloured as her mane, the strands numerous and plush. The ribbons of white hair touch the ground ever so slightly when her tail is not pulled up in the popularized method of Arabians. In truth, the only break in the smooth, manicured nature of her appearance are the scars that lay in layers upon her shoulders. A bony nub juts from each side of her, just below the withers, and it is often raw and sometimes bleeds. Here, massive, milk-white wings once grew. On exceptionally bitter days she tends to try and restore them, but within hours they will wither, molt and dissipate. The scarring is just too great for her to overtake, and every time she tries to regain flight another layer of damaged tissue is laid to fester in her flesh.
extended psychology
Truly, Alouette is vicious because she chooses to be. She is not much more than a pretty little ego trip, wound up and spun out. The loss of her three foals pains her, as does the subduing and belittling hand of eternal life. More than anything, though, she dwells on the loss of her beloved wings, the genetic gift of her mother. It was true that her mother and daughter, too, had been denied the appendages for fear of their escape and unruliness, but Berlin and Aleigh had not been granted the possibility of one day regrowing them. Lark tried in vain, but could never renew the splendor that she had been born with. This leads her to be angry and spiteful, often lashing out at those she perceives as weak or disadvantaged. Her adamant nature often places her as the leader in a group.
Even so, her mood tends toward that of a nurturing mother. Behind the mask of leader, war-monger and brutality embodied, she is still feminine and caring. Any orphaned foal would be hers if she could manage it, as it is not so important to her that the babe be genetically linked but emotionally. The femme has also been known to heal those around her, even those seen as strangers... but usually only for a stiff penalty.

exposition
And there she stood, hock-deep in crystalline water that swirled and enveloped her copper-plated reflection, impromptu and perfect as she had always been. With a life sentence of such unanimously agreed grandeur, there was little reason to plan or to surround herself with pomp and circumstance. It seemed now that she simply existed, in the most primitive of definitions, and faded in and out of social circles and purpose as she pleased.
The falls that plummeted over the cliff face two-dozen yards upstream of her brought with them the crispest, coldest water she thought she had ever felt. This was saying a lot, it seemed, for she had stood in more than a few puddles in her one-hundred-sixteen years, and had experience some of the bleakest winters seemingly possible. As her muzzle grazed the glimmering surface, the mid-day sun reflecting off of it with the sort of summer's vehemence it so often boasted, her mind flipped through volume after volume of events. Finally, her delicate head lifting from the water with a final gulp, she decided that she had been stupid to even exaggerate the temperature to such a degree. Of course she had felt colder waters! This was summer. The winter brought sleet and ice. It was her bitterness and self-pity that had wrought the unneeded complaints.
With her tail half submerged in the water, strands of it radiated outward, floating in an arrangement that was reminiscent of a cobweb. It did not bother her to be wet now, at least not as much as it had in her first fifty years or so. When you had been granted enough time to forget your own age, something as discomfort seemed trivial - not to say that she would not complain.
A tentative hoof lifted, careful of the splashing water and slippery bottom, and she pulled herself toward the shore in her usual collected way. Lark may have been the equal to an old nag, but she was still egotistical and much in favor of her own beauty. There was little chance of her wandering about dirty or without her head held high, even though she lived alone more often than not and saw very few strangers in her day-to-day activities. Really, she knew most everyone on the island in passing, and could tell you some intricate details of those she had never even spoken to. Forever is a long time to be bored, and gossip was a partial cure at least.
"Ugh," she grunted, looking down at the muddy hooves and fetlocks she now sported. A snort left her, head shaking, mane flying and landing in a way that was tousled but pleasant. Her tail hung in wet slabs of mud-tipped silk. The graveled edge of the man-made water feature crunched and ground together under the weight of her tiny hooves as she moved toward grass.
